Tech giants unveil new router, security features that make them stand out
Posted On July 1, 2021
Microsoft, Cisco, Juniper, and many others are rolling out their own routers and firewalls to make them more competitive with Google’s Pixel and Apple’s iPhone.
But the company that dominates the home security and networking market, Google, has also launched its own router for home users, a device called the Pixel, that it hopes will bring in new customers.
Here’s what you need to know about the new router and the security features it supports.
What is the Pixel router?
The Pixel router is a small router that is powered by a Snapdragon 615 SoC, which is designed to run on top of Android and other Linux platforms.
Google says the Pixel is the “worlds first home router to run Google Play Store apps.”
The Pixel is powered with the Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and is compatible with most major networking products.
The router can connect to the internet using Wi-Fi Direct and its built-in 802.11ac Wi-FbE radio, which can also be used to connect to home security systems.
Why are the routers being rolled out now?
Google has been working on the Pixel for months, but it is expected to launch the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, which are the first devices with Wi-FI Direct and a built-on Android 8.0 Oreo operating system.
Google has also been testing the Pixel with security updates, which include the Pixel and Pixel XL.
Google also announced that the Pixel smartphone will have Wi-Gig, which promises faster data speeds.
What devices will be supported?
Google said the Pixel routers will work with all of the following devices: Apple’s iPhones, iPads, Macs, Chromebooks, and more.
Apple has also announced support for the Pixel 3, which it says is the world’s fastest Wi-fi router.
What are the security issues that the routers will have?
The router’s built-out wireless radio can be configured to work with Firewall and Firewall Duo, the security software that Google has used for years to protect home networks.
Google’s security software includes features that can be used for home-network security, such as the ability to remotely disable the router if it is detected to be compromised.
Google said that it has added a feature that can block an attack that would be launched from a network’s home network if a router is compromised.
What else can be added to the Pixel?
Google is adding a few more security features to the new Pixel router, including a security app that can automatically connect to an internal device, which will help prevent a remote attacker from getting at data from a device on the network.
The app can also add a feature called an “Auto Switching Protection,” which will let you automatically switch Wi-fbs to a different one if you have a router that doesn’t support the security feature.
Will there be any new security features coming to the router?
Google isn’t saying, but some have speculated that there could be a new feature that allows the router to automatically detect a network if one of its devices has been compromised.
There is no confirmation from Google, but one possibility is that the company will add a new option to its router’s security settings that allows it to automatically switch to a network that does not support security features.
