A new cable management system, which is expected to hit the market in the next few months, will offer a way to protect cable TV subscribers from network degradation, says New Scientist.
The cable management service is designed to help you reduce cable TV’s signal degradation by keeping the channels running smoothly.
The system uses an Ethernet cable, which has a limited number of lanes, to keep a connection to the home network.
Each channel has a specific frequency, so the system automatically picks up the right channel when the channel is on or off, depending on which channel is being used.
Each user can also choose to keep all the channels on or turn them off, or turn a certain channel off completely.
The solution is that each channel can be monitored remotely and can be switched on and off.
“A typical cable management is a two-dimensional screen that is connected to a computer via Ethernet, so it’s very, very expensive,” says Michael Glynn, an electrical engineer at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
“So if you have a lot of channels, you need a lot more bandwidth than just a few megabits per second.
The goal is to improve the network speed and to keep the network as stable as possible.”
This is what the new system looks like, but it will also be a bit bigger than the typical cable box, which could weigh up to six kilograms.
The systems that come with cable management boxes are designed to be able to operate at speeds of up to 2 Gbps, but there are many different ways to increase this to more than 3 Gbps.
“You can put up a lot in order to achieve the maximum speed possible, but then you also have to have a robust network architecture, which you have to do for your business,” Glynn says.
This is the main reason that the new cable managers can’t be installed in a single room, so each room needs to be connected to multiple systems.
This may seem like a simple idea, but for a cable network, it’s quite complex.
To install this system in a typical house, a technician needs to connect the network cable to a central server, which connects to the network TV and connects to a remote system.
This remote system then connects to each room, which then connects the system to the cable modem and switches it over to the TV.
In this case, the cable management cable is a little larger than the cable TV and a little thicker.
So to connect this system to each of these different rooms, the system needs to carry two separate cables.
And each cable needs to run a different frequency.
“The cable management server is also connected to the local area network (LAN) and to the internet, so if there’s a lot activity, there may be a lot to deal with,” Glynns says.
But it’s not as simple as just putting a cable in each room.
This solution requires a lot less space.
“In a typical home, you would probably use a cable modem to connect to the router, which would take up a room, and you’d also need to connect a modem to the system, to connect it to the remote, and then connect the modem to a server and then to a power outlet,” Gwynns says, referring to the power used to run the system.
“And the server would also need some network equipment and so forth, which means the total cost for the system is about $10 to $20.”
But the system won’t cost as much to build as it does to operate, so there is no reason to spend more than $50 for the cable system.
In order to install this cable management solution, it takes only two people to put it together.
“It’s a very small box, and the main limitation is that it’s really hard to install,” Gennan says.
“But you can build one very quickly.”
The cable box is connected via Ethernet to the server and is also powered by a battery, which Glynn hopes will help the system last much longer.
“If you don’t use a lot, it’ll last a very long time, but if you do use a little bit, you can put it into hibernation mode and not worry about it,” Gannons says.
The next big cable management project is to install an Ethernet switch.
This will allow the system not only to connect directly to the LAN but also to the Internet, where it will be able access a network of up-to-date cable TV channels.
“This is the way to connect cable to the cloud, which will help to save bandwidth, which can be very important for broadband,” Ganni says.
